Art and Design

At Brunton the arts are highly valued and we are proud to be an Artsmark Gold school. Art and design lessons are designed to challenge, enthuse and inspire children, whilst deepening their learning in cross-curricular studies. Children develop confidence in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and textiles as they build and develop these skills through the key stages and develop a good critical understanding of historical art movements. They develop their own unique styles by making individual art as well as collaborating on larger scale group pieces.

Furthermore, they develop key life skills of creative and personal expression; communicating ideas; the ability to visualise and imagine; and to critically observe and interpret the visual world around them. Authentic opportunities to engage in the arts are provided through visits to museums and galleries; work with real artists and participation in community arts projects and exhibitions.

Each half term we have a different artist of the month who is celebrated in displays around school and through presentations delivered by our Arts Ambassadors. We have 18 Arts Ambassadors from years 2, 3 and 4 and children are invited to apply for this role annually.  As well as delivering artist of the month they also give us extremely valuable advice on our arts curriculum.

Art and Design achievements in the last 12 months include sending two ‘No Outsiders’ Elmer sculptures off on parade at Newcastle City Library and St Thomas Church, and also welcoming local MP Catherine Mckinnell as part of Artsmark celebration week.
